College move-in is just a few weeks away but before you set up the dorm here are 5 Things to do before move-in day!

1. Obtain a HIPAA Release Form and Healthcare Proxy (also known as a Healthcare Power of Attorney). They may always be your baby but once they turn 18 they are adults in the eyes of the law which means you no longer have access to their medical records and will not be able to make any medical decisions without these documents in place.

2. Review insurance needs.
Health Insurance- Confirm that your child is covered even when they are away at college (and especially if they are going out of state).

Homeowners Insurance- to determine if your child’s belongings are covered while they are away at college. If not, you may want to consider renter’s insurance if your child will be living off-campus.

Car Insurance- Will you still need coverage if your child doesn’t drive and will not have a car on campus? Will the child use the car when they return from college and is coverage still needed?

3. Schedule medical and dental appointments Make sure to obtain any prescriptions beforehand as well as copies so that they can be filled while at school if needed. You should also make sure your child’s vaccinations are up-to-date because many colleges will not allow students on campus without the proper vaccinations.

4. Create a budget for spending at college.
This is the perfect time for parents to sit down with their children and review finances. Consider opening a student checking or savings account with a credit union or bank affiliated with the school. Doing so could save hundreds of dollars in ATM fees when withdrawing money at school.

5. Building credit & establishing good credit habits. Opening up a credit card in your child’s name can have major advantages in the long run as it will allow them to start building credit. It can also teach smart money habits. talk with your child about limitations and credit habits to help them understand how their spending impacts their budget.

If you need help making sure your college-bound student has what they need, let us know, we are here to help.

Creating new habits isn't always easy!. James Clear, in his book "Atomic Habits," offers the following guidelines to help you make changes and stick with them until they become habits.

1. The 1% rule-It’s all about small increments building over time. So starting with getting 1% better each day rather than going 100% from the get-go and getting burnt out over time.

2. Habit stacking- Clear recommends pairing the new habit with something that you already do every day.

One of the examples he uses in the book is, if you want to start flossing, you pair that with brushing your teeth.

3. Have a specific plan- Instead of saying something like, “I want to read more,” it’s going to be “I will read for 30 minutes every day at 9:00 p.m.”

4. Keep track- Tracking your habits is important too. There are plenty of apps out there you can use to check off that you did your task. There is that reward system built into us that when we’re able to check off the box and say we did it, that releases a little bit of that dopamine. And that helps you continue doing those habits over time.

5. Reward yourself- Once you hit a milestone give yourself a reward to look forward to and to keep your momentum going over time with that habit-building.

6. Reflect and revise
And then of course, after you have been at it for a while, you want to reflect on your habit, reviewing what worked, thinking about what you need to adjust to continue moving forward and what you’re next going to build on to achieve whatever your long-term goal is.

So the idea here is to start small, do something that’s achievable, be specific, and then review that at the end of whatever timeframe you stated.

Consistency over Time=Success!

What habit do you need to start?
