Going to multiple agents to get a quote can actually hurt your chances of getting the best deal in the marketplace. Let me explain why..
📌 Insurance carriers only allow one agent to quote per renewal cycle, which is decided on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you're reaching out to several agents to quote, the first one to submit your application blocks that carrier, meaning no other agent can access that carrier. This can be problematic for several reasons.
1. Speed becomes the name of the game and not accuracy. You could get stuck working with a not-so-great agent.
2. No leverage is created on your behalf. Your goal is to create competition between carriers, not agents.
3. It can force you to become an "insurance expert". If you're left comparing quotes from several agents you will have to answer questions like: Do these quotes all have the same coverages? Why is one quote so much less than the other?
📌 An agent acts as your storyteller to underwriters. When you use multiple agents, you lose your ability to control your narrative. By partnering with one agent who knows the ins and outs of your business, you can trust that your business is being presented to carriers as a "top of stack" submission. Keep in mind that underwriters receive hundreds of submissions each month and will choose the ones they know they have a good chance of writing, so getting your submission to the top of their stack is crucial.
When you're looking to find an agent to work with, here is my recommended approach:
✅ Meet with several agents well in advance of your renewal and choose the one you believe is best equipped to handle your business.
✅ Share your history, safety practices, and policy information to review your current program so agents can fully understand your business and convey your story to underwriters.
✅ Trust your agent to navigate the marketplace to find you the best deal with the proper coverages and terms.
