NASL Memories: Robert "Bob" Hermann was a Navy war hero and a business tycoon who made a fortune in packaging, but whose impact on the development of American soccer may have been his greatest triumph of all. Born on 3 January 1923, Hermann married into the Busch brewery family and used that relationship to establish St. Louis as the epi-center of the sport, founding and owning the St. Louis Stars from 1967-77, then moving the team to Anaheim and re-branding it as the California Surf until selling the franchise in 1980. Hermann also created the Hermann Trophy in 1967 -- given annually to the country's best college men's and women's players -- and the Saint Louis University Hermann Stadium is named in his honor. Hermann was elected to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2001, but passed away at the age of 97 in 2020.
