The Good Lord knows that I can use all the help that I can get. I suppose that’s why today is a most special day for me. On this Feast of Guardian Angels, I am encouraged to know that I can reach out to that wonderful angel of God to ask for assistance—at any time and on demand, because that Guardian Angel is at my side always. These angels are innocent, bountiful, and good, and they are assigned to us for the duration of our earthly lives. They reflect God. I don’t know about you, but that is most reassuring for me. So often I find that I am powerless and vulnerable, and I need support from our Lord and His mighty angels.
Likewise, today’s readings lead us to a most certain understanding that the Lord has ordained a relationship between our Guardian Angel and us. Today’s readings also tell us about the special role of humility, as well as what it means to be “like a child.” In Matthew 18 23 are told:
The disciples approached Jesus and said,
"Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?"
He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said,
"Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.
Whoever humbles himself like this child
is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.
And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.
"See that you do not despise one of these little ones,
for I say to you that their angels in heaven
always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."
Source: Matthew 18
There is a lot at play in this passage. Here is just a little of it:
a) Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven? Children and the child-like, because the Lord tells us this in no uncertain terms: “… unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.”
b) What is one of the greatest traits we can ever possess? Humility, because Jesus reminds us: “Whoever humbles himself like this child
is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”
c) Lord, what must I do? I must humble myself, and I must receive a child in His name. The Lord instructs us: “… whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.” Why? Because we receive God when we receive a child in His Holy Name.
d) Lord, how should I treat these children? The Lord teaches me, “"See that you do not despise one of these little ones …”
e) Is their status (that status of angels) really that special? Yes, because Jesus exhorts us as follows: “… for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."
Imagine that: The angels of children—children’s angels— “always look upon the face of [His] heavenly Father.” Notice the use of the word “always.”
I, for one, have missed a lot of this for much of my life, and I am embarrassed to say so. I have probably disregarded the presence and efficacy of my Guardian Angel for such a long time, so much so that I wonder if that Guardian Angel has “stuck around,” or if he has grown tired and weary of my non-acknowledgment of his presence. But I know that God is infinitely merciful, and He will allow me a path back to the Truth, especially if and when I am willing to humble myself and ask for forgiveness with all my heart.
One of the great Italian saints of our time—St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina—had a unique relationship with his Guardian Angel. He communicated the importance of our Guardian Angels most significantly, perhaps, to his so-called “spiritual children” including, but not limited, one by the name of Raffaelina (the feminine version of the name for St. Raphael, the Archangel):
Know, O Raffaelina, that this good angel prays for you: he offers to God all your good works that you accomplish, as well as your holy and pure desires. In the hours in which you seem to be alone and abandoned, do not complain about not having a soul-mate to whom you can open (your heart) and to whom you can confide your sorrows: – for the love of God, do not forget this invisible companion who is always present to listen to you and always ready to console you.
O delightful intimacy, O blessed companionship! Oh, if only all men knew how to understand and appreciate this very great gift that God, in the excess of His love for men, has assigned to us this celestial spirit! Recall frequently his presence: you ought to fix your mind’s eye upon him. Thank him, pray to him. He is so finely mannered, so discreet: respect him. Have continual fear lest you offend the purity of his gaze.
Invoke frequently this (your) Guardian Angel, this benefactor angel. Repeat often the beautiful prayer: “Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom the heavenly Father’s bounty entrusts me here; enlighten me, guard me, guide me now and forever.”

I especially love the part about our Guardian Angel being our “soulmate." Again, St. Pio says:
“… do not complain about not having a soul-mate to whom you can open (your heart) and to whom you can confide your sorrows: – for the love of God, do not forget this invisible companion who is always present to listen to you and always ready to console you.”

I have taken so much for granted for life, especially this most holy and pronounced blessing from God. So, I look again to the great Santo Pio:
“…. if only all men knew how to understand and appreciate this very great gift that God, in the excess of His love for men, has assigned to us this celestial spirit!”
There is so much more to say, of course, but all of this brings me to a prayer today: Lord, I know how inattentive and unappreciative I have been. Please allow me today to understand this great gift that You have given me in the form of my wonderful Guardian Angel.
God bless your day.
