It's not very often I can make a trip home after picking up my kids from school and not see an Amazon delivery vehicle. Amazon is everywhere and they also have some great programs available for owner operator & truck drivers.

Amazon Relay provides carriers access to their freight network, giving fleet owners and owner operators the opportunity to grow their truck driving businesses. Here is the Amazon Relay Insurance Requirements:

Have you ever thought about starting a junk removal business? If you're not confident you can do it on your own...there are all kinds of franchises out there. Some of the more recognizable are 1800GOTJUNK, COLLEGE HUNKS HAULING JUNK, JUNK KING, JUNKLUGGERS, JDOG, 1800JUNKPRO. Junk Removal is a huge opportunity for individuals with the right mindset and someone who doesn't mind getting dirty.

It is important to educate yourself on the different types of insurance to ensure you are making the best decision to protect your business and assets. Being educated on the types of insurance needed for your state and your business can be a great cost-saving move too. You're going to need commercial auto, commercial general liability, workers comp, additional insured endorsements...maybe even an umbrella policy!

There is a wide variety of claims you may run into and it would sure be nice to have someone that could walk you through scenarios. When I help build two separate million-dollar junk businesses, we ran into anything from trucks backing into flag poles/mail boxes/customer's home, tow trucks pulling us out of residential yards from getting stuck, scratching brand new hardwood floors removing items, damaged door framers, employee back injuries, liability accidents, you name it!

From an insurance perspective, junk haulers get thrown in a "Gray area" because underwriters don't know how to categorize you. You're not a mover, a donation pick-up service, or a residential trash service...you're really a combination of all of them. It's important to work with insurance broker who knows the industry and can best demonstrate your business when pitching it to underwriters for insurance carriers.

When you're a new start up trucking business, you have limited commercial trucking insurance options when it comes to selecting your carrier. Progressive is one of those A+ carriers that isn't shy when it comes to new trucking businesses. I always make sure I bring up any potential discount savings programs available to my clients, like Progressive's Smart Haul program. Smart Haul® gives eligible for-hire truckers using an electronic logging device (ELD) the opportunity to save on their Progressive commercial truck policy in exchange for permission to access their driving data. New truck customers who participate save an average of $1,106.

What is the liability insurance requirement to gain your own Trucking Authority?

Whether you have been an owner-operator leased under another company or just looking to start your own trucking business, one of the first steps is logging on the FMCSA website and applying for authority. The trucking authority filing is going to run you around $300 for interstate authority. Essentially, you will be on your own to find and book loads giving you the freedom to search on load boards for truckloads that are the best fit for you. This allows you to set your own schedule, decide what type of loads you want to haul and what routes you want to take. Remember, you don't submit your proof of insurance directly to the FMCSA. The FMCSA requires your insurance company to submit the form and insurance certificate on your behalf. A BMC-91 form will be flied by your insurance carrier on your behalf to meet the minimum public liability (bodily injury/property damage/environmental restoration) requirements. Here is your minimum requirements for motor carrier's hauling freight: $750,000 - $5,000,000, depending on commodities transported; $300,000 for non-hazardous freight moved only in vehicles weighing under 10,001 lbs.

When it's time to shop your trucking insurance, be sure & ask about downtime coverage!

If a truck is in the repair shop for an extended period of time, it can cause significant issues for a motor carrier. To protect motor carriers if a truck is not drivable, a great A+ carrier like Great West Casualty will include "Downtime" coverage that provides $450 per week for a maximum of eight weeks or until the repairs are completed and the vehicle is determined to be roadworthy, whichever comes first.

Great West includes Downtime coverage at no extra charge, as part of the motor carrier Physical Damage and Non-Trucking Use Physical Damage coverage.

The coverage has a 35-day waiting period that begins when three conditions are met:

1. Great West has given the approval to repair.

2. The insured has given the repair facility approval to repair.

3. The vehicle is out of service for repair because of a covered loss and is in the custody of the repair facility.

Tarping is hard work—from heavy tarps to uneven loads, not to mention wind, rain, or ice. How does one safely manage this necessary evil? The best advice is to stay off the load entirely if possible.

-If there is a tarping station or a tarping machine, use it.

-Tarps should always be set on the load by a forklift.

-If you are in freezing weather, ask to put your tarps inside a warm building while you are being loaded. This will allow the tarp to defrost a little and make it easier to handle.

-Never stand on the load or the tarp. Instead, crawl on the load or tarp.

-Park on the leeward side of a large building or van trailer to block the wind before trying to tarp.

-On loads requiring two tarps, always unroll and completely secure the rear tarp before unrolling the front tarp.

-Secure all four corners first. If it’s windy, attach rolled-up straps to the grommets with bungees before dropping the sides to keep them flush with the cargo. -

Test for voids under the tarp before committing your weight, even when crawling.
