With all the rain we have been getting and are expected to get this weekend, PLEASE check on your Sump pumps. Here are some tips to make sure they are in working order. Better to be safe than sorry!
To ensure your sump pump functions effectively and prevents water damage, regularly inspect and maintain it by cleaning the sump pit, checking the pump for debris, and testing the float switch, discharge pipe, and backup power source.
Here's a more detailed to-do list:
Regular Checks (Monthly or Before Wet Season):
Inspect the sump pit: Check for debris, sediment, or obstructions that could hinder the pump's operation.
Test the float switch: Ensure it activates the pump when water levels rise.
Check the discharge pipe: Ensure it's free of blockages and that the water is discharging properly away from the house.
Listen for unusual noises: Any loud or unusual sounds could indicate a problem.
Check for leaks: Inspect the pump and surrounding area for any signs of leaks.
Ensure the pump is plugged in and operational: Confirm the pump is receiving power and is ready to function.
Annual Maintenance:
Deep clean the sump pit: Remove accumulated sediment and debris.
Clean the sump pump: Remove the pump from the pit, clean any debris from the impeller and screen, and inspect for wear and tear.
Check the check valve: Ensure it's in good condition and functioning properly.
Test the pump: Fill the sump pit with water to ensure the pump turns on and operates correctly.
Inspect the discharge line: Check for cracks, leaks, or blockages.
Check the backup power source: Ensure it's charged and functioning correctly.
Check the electrical connections: Ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
Additional Tips:
Consider a battery backup: A battery backup can ensure the pump continues to function during power outages.
Keep the sump pit covered: This helps prevent debris from entering the pit.
Be aware of your local building codes: These codes may dictate the proper discharge distance for sump pumps.
Consult a professional: If you're unsure about any aspect of sump pump maintenance, contact a qualified plumber or contractor.
