If you have life insurance through your job, here is the math nobody runs.

Most employers offer 1 to 2 times your salary in life coverage. So if you make 100K, your family gets 100K to 200K if you pass away.

Now run the numbers your family would actually need.

Mortgage. Kid college costs. 5 to 10 years of replacement income. Final expenses.

For most people with kids, the real number is 10 to 15 times annual income. So the typical work policy covers maybe 1 year of what your family actually needs.

The work policy is not a safety net. It is the down payment on a longer conversation.

If you have kids, take 10 minutes this weekend. Add up what your family would need. Compare it to what you have. The gap is usually surprising.
