Candles make rooms cozier, smell better, and are affordable gifts. But they’re easy to forget. How often have you left one burning unattended—despite knowing better?

Here’s a candle safety tip:

If your candle is in a glass container, don’t burn it all the way down. Here’s the reasoning for this lesser-known rule: As a candle burns low, heat builds up in its container, and without a lot of wax to absorb the heat, the temperature of the glass climbs. This can cause it to crack or, in extreme cases, shatter. To avoid that situation, stop burning your candle when about ½ inch of wax is left.

Before “fall” and “autumn,” September through November was known as the harvest season. “Fall,” shortened from “fall of the year” or “fall of the leaf,” appeared in 1500s England. “Autumn,” from the French automne, arrived in the 1600s and became England’s preferred term by the 18th century, while “fall” grew more popular in America.
