A sump pump and a sewer backup can cause water damage, but that doesn’t mean every homeowners policy handles that damage the same way.

At State Farm, Back-Up of Sewer or Drain coverage is an endorsement that has to be added to the homeowners policy for that coverage to apply.

Don’t wait until there’s water on the floor to find out whether it’s on your policy.

Working remotely from your kitchen table and operating a business out of your home are two different things from an insurance standpoint.

If you simply work remotely for an employer, that generally doesn’t require additional homeowners coverage.

If customers come to the house, you keep business inventory there, or you’ve started operating your own business from the property, it’s worth having a conversation about it.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

If you only improve the security on one account this month, start with your email.
Your email is often the key to resetting passwords for banking, shopping and other online accounts. Use a strong, unique password and turn on multi-factor authentication.

It takes a few minutes and makes it harder for someone else to get into everything connected to that address.

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10, and this year’s focus is something most homes deal with every day: rechargeable batteries.

One simple habit: don’t charge phones, tablets, power tools or other lithium-ion devices on a bed, couch or other soft surface.

Use the charger made or approved for the device, and stop using a battery that is swelling, unusually hot or giving off an unusual odor. It’s a small change to a routine most of us barely think about.

Boats, campers and other summer equipment will start heading into storage soon.

Before putting something away for the season, remove valuables, take a few current photos, and make sure you know where it will be stored.

Before the furnace starts running every day:
• Check the filter.
• Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
• Make sure heating vents aren’t blocked.

Fall officially starts today.

Before the leaves really start coming down, take a walk around the house and check the gutters, downspouts and drainage areas.

Make sure downspouts are connected and directing water away from the foundation, and clear anything that is already blocking water flow.

It’s much easier to take care of now than after wet leaves start filling everything in.
