A water stain around a light fixture is never “just drywall and paint.”

The insurance carrier paid for drywall repairs and some paint—but my experience told me to keep asking questions.

I asked whether there had been any electrical problems after the water intrusion.

The answer: the breakers had been tripping.

That changed the entire investigation.

Water can enter light fixtures, junction boxes, wiring and other electrical components. When breakers are tripping after water intrusion, the affected circuits should be evaluated by a licensed electrician. That may include insulation-resistance testing—commonly called a megohm or Megger test—to determine whether the wiring insulation has been compromised.

What initially looked like a cosmetic drywall repair had potentially become a life-safety issue.

This is what separates a surface-level estimate from a thorough claim investigation. An insurance estimate only shows what the carrier chose to include—it does not guarantee that every damaged component was identified or that your family’s safety was properly evaluated.
