đ My Journey Back Into Florida Home Insurance
Iâve been in the insurance industry since the 1990s, and over the years Iâve seen just about everything â the highs, the lows, and the unexpected twists that come with protecting peopleâs homes, vehicles, and businesses. For a long time, home insurance in Florida was one of my main focuses. But if youâve lived here, you know the story: the market has been turbulent, unpredictable, and at times downright discouraging.
Back in the late 2010s, Floridaâs home insurance market was flooded with competition. Around 2018, there were five or six companies aggressively battling for territory and market share. Each wanted to be the âgo-toâ provider for inexpensive coverage. On the surface, that sounded great for homeowners â more options, lower premiums. But behind the scenes, it was a race to the bottom.
One by one, these companies started to collapse. Some went out of business entirely, others pulled out of the state, and many left agents like me scrambling to re-shop policies for clients who suddenly had no coverage. It didnât happen all at once. It was a slow unraveling. Iâd place a client with a carrier, only to find out a year or two later that the company was gone. Then Iâd move them to the next âflavor of the month,â only to repeat the cycle again.
For me, it felt like spinning my wheels. The whole point of building a book of business is stability â creating a foundation of clients you can serve for years. But with carriers dropping out left and right, cancellations piling up, and underwriting reasons being used to drop policies, it became exhausting. I eventually shifted my focus to other lines of insurance, like commercial auto, trucking, and contractor coverage, where I could build more consistency and help businesses protect what matters most.
That decision gave me room to grow in new directions. I built relationships with fleet managers, contractors, and professionals who needed reliable coverage. I launched creative campaigns, educational materials, and even digital products to help people understand their options. And for a while, I stayed away from home insurance altogether.
But hereâs the twist: clients from years ago have started calling me again. Theyâre frustrated with skyrocketing premiums, sometimes doubling or tripling in just a few years. Theyâre seeing their mortgage payments climb because insurance is escrowed, and theyâre asking me the same question: âIs there anything you can do?â
The answer is yes.
With the tools I use today, I can quickly shop policies across multiple carriers. I enter the basics â square footage, year built, construction type, zip code, and so on â and Iâm able to see quotes from agents all over the state. I can narrow down options to three carriers that make sense, and more often than not, the premiums are half or less of what people are currently paying.
Just yesterday, I helped a client whose premium had jumped to over $6,000. Even with past claims on her record, I was able to find her a policy for less than half that amount. Yes, we had to make adjustments â excluding water damage coverage, for example â but I also improved her policy in other areas, adding protections she didnât have before, like Equipment Breakdown coverage.
Thatâs the kind of balance I strive for: transparency about whatâs changing, but creativity in finding ways to strengthen coverage where it matters.
So why am I back in the home insurance game? Because I see the need. Florida homeowners are tired of feeling trapped by rising premiums and disappearing carriers. They want someone who understands the history, whoâs been through the ups and downs, and who can navigate the current landscape with honesty and skill.
I may have stepped away for a while, but I never stopped caring about helping people protect their homes. And now, with better tools and renewed focus, Iâm ready to help families save thousands of dollars and put that money to better use â whether itâs paying down debt, investing in their future, or simply breathing easier knowing their coverage is secure.
