Average advisors wait for a pre-existing problem.

Exceptional advisors create insight.

If you only respond when clients say, “We need help,” you’ll compete on price.

If you challenge thinking and expand opportunity, you compete on value.

Which category does your process fall into?

The free guide walks through how to create need, build urgency, and strengthen trust — before objections arise: https://lttr.ai/AuA5H

If your pipeline feels reactive, it’s time to change the approach.

Even when a family agrees in principle, readiness is usually uneven.

The owner may not be ready to let go. The successor may want the role but not yet have the experience to carry it. The family may want fairness without having agreed on what fairness actually means.

Agreement in principle is a starting point. Readiness is the real question.

Advisors who assess readiness across the table early create much better outcomes than those who discover the gap halfway through the process.

The businesses that need succession planning most are often not the ones in obvious distress.

They are the ones doing well. Revenue is solid. Clients are loyal. Leadership has been in place for years. From the outside, everything looks fine.

But if the owner cannot step back without the business weakening, the succession work has not started.

Michael C. Valdez, CFP®, CSP®, focuses his practice on exactly those businesses: successful Main Street and lower middle market companies where founder dependency is still the limiting factor.

“Are you ready for succession?” is usually too broad to produce a useful answer.

Owners can respond more clearly when advisors ask about specific parts of the transition: personal financial needs, the company’s dependence on the owner, the successor’s experience, management relationships, and family expectations.

A structured conversation gives clients language for concerns they may not have known how to raise. It also helps the advisor determine where deeper discovery is needed.

Families can feel confident about a succession plan while holding very different expectations about the future.

As Tara Thomas, CPA, CSP®, asks, “We assume we know how everybody feels about this, but have we ever asked?”

In our latest Member Spotlight, Tara from Forvis Mazars US shares how a clear framework helps dealership families uncover those assumptions while ownership and leadership decisions are still taking shape.

Here's what a lot of advisors miss in these conversations: ownership and leadership get treated as one job when they're actually separate ones.

Ask a family four questions and see if the answers match. Who owns the business? Who runs it day to day? Who hires and pays senior leaders? What decisions need shareholder approval?

Run this four-question test with your next client before the ownership conversation starts: https://lttr.ai/AuCyW
