The 1907 $5 Legal Tender Note gets its nickname from the frontiersman scene on the back — a woodchopper, his family, and their cabin, symbolizing westward expansion.
That red seal means something too: it’s a United States Note, backed directly by the Treasury, not gold or silver — different from the Silver Certificates and Federal Reserve Notes of the same era.
Issued 1907-1923, these “Horse Blanket” notes were about 40% bigger than today’s bills! Circulated examples typically run $80-$300+, with top-grade pieces bringing thousands at auction.
