More than a century ago, an aging tycoon poured his fortune into a railroad that everyone said was impossible, a line of track that ran straight out across the open ocean all the way to Key West. 🚂

Henry Flagler had already built a chain of grand hotels and a railroad down Florida's east coast, but his final and boldest dream was to extend it over the water to Key West, then the closest deep American port to the new Panama Canal. Critics called it Flagler's Folly. Building it meant laying miles of track across open sea, spanning the gaps between islands with long concrete viaducts, and battling heat, mosquitoes, and hurricanes that killed workers and washed away progress. It took seven brutal years.

In 1912, an 82 year old Flagler rode the first train triumphantly into Key West, reportedly weeping that he could see his dream fulfilled. For more than twenty years the Overseas Railroad carried passengers out across the shimmering water in one of the great engineering feats of its age. Then the catastrophic Labor Day hurricane of 1935 tore it apart in a single night. The railbed was rebuilt as the Overseas Highway, the road drivers still take to the Keys today. 🌊

FRA Administrator David Fink was in Anchorage, Alaska, to present Alaska Railroad Corporation President & CEO Bill O’Leary with over $28 million through the National Railroad Partnership Program (NRPP) for improvements to the century-old Hurricane Gulch Bridge.

NRPP funding will help extend the bridge’s service life and help eliminate speed restrictions, supporting safer, smoother and more efficient rail transportation across Alaska.
