Professor PPLI is back, and he brought friends! 🦉

Born in 2019 on the cover of The Wit and Wisdom of Professor PPLI, our wise bird guide has been reborn. He now has four new companions: Lila the owl, Max the stork, Carl the raven, and Allison the falcon.

Together they'll explain important Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI) asset structuring concepts in a new short video series. The first video arrives next month.

In the meantime, our new blog post gives you a first look at the video and the original book introduction that started it all.

Brazil Today

Lei 14.754 closed automatic deferral inside many passive offshore companies. It did not repeal life insurance.

For a Brazilian tax resident holding wealth through a controlled foreign company, adjusted profits are now generally pulled into Brazilian tax every December 31 at 15% — distribution or not. That leak is structural, not optional.

Redeemable foreign life policies sit on a different timetable. Income is generally taxed when effectively received, not marked to market each year. And at death, indemnities paid to named beneficiaries are generally IR-exempt, with the capital treated as outside the estate — which is the statutory basis for bypassing inventário and, in the usual case, ITCMD that can reach 8% depending on the state.

The new case study walks through one family: age 67, roughly US$40 million offshore, two adult children, no need for large withdrawals. Keep compounding during life, transfer cleanly at death.

The important part is what has to be true for it to work:

→ Genuine risk transfer — a thin death benefit over a wrapper fails

→ Scale — charges of 0.5–1%+ a year mean this rarely makes sense below US$10–15M

→ SUSEP and ownership design, handled with insurance counsel rather than improvised

→ DIRPF reporting, plus Central Bank filings above the thresholds

→ Investor control and diversification rules that keep the contract insurance

The real question isn't whether PPLI is fashionable. It's whether the policy still reads as life insurance when Receita Federal, the heirs, and the insurer all look at the same contract.

California’s Billionaire Tax Is on the Ballot: What It Means for High-Net-Worth Wealth Planning in 2026

On June 25, 2026, California made history — for reasons no high-net-worth family should ignore. The state officially certified Proposition 40, the One-Time Wealth Tax for State-Funded Health Care Programs Initiative (also known as the Billionaire Tax Act), for the November 3 ballot.

The UK just lost its non-dom regime — and wealthy families are voting with their feet.

Since the abolition of the UK's non-domiciled tax status in April 2025, a growing wave of high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth families have reassessed their long-term residency. Some have already left for Dubai, Switzerland, Monaco, and other jurisdictions competing for mobile capital. Others are preparing to.
But relocating is only half the problem. A new address doesn't automatically solve the harder questions: How do you keep wealth compounding tax-efficiently across borders? How do you protect assets from the next country's policy shift? How do you pass wealth to the next generation without triggering forced-heirship rules you never agreed to?
In our latest post, Michael Malloy breaks down why Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI) — integrated through the Expanded Worldwide Planning (EWP) framework — is emerging as the structure of choice for families leaving the UK. Not as a quick tax shelter, but as a portable, compliant platform built to travel with a family wherever they land next.

How do ultra-high-net-worth families protect wealth, defer capital gains, and reduce estate taxes—without giving up investment flexibility?

In a recent episode of the *Build to Billions* podcast, Brett Swarts sits down with Michael Malloy (Founder & CEO of EWP Financial) to unpack Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI)—what Malloy calls “an unlimited Roth IRA with added benefits.”

They cover:
• How PPLI structures can remove assets from the taxable estate
• Capital gains tax deferral inside the policy
• Asset protection through properly designed irrevocable trusts
• Why compliance and investor control rules matter
• Who this strategy is (and isn’t) designed for

If you work with UHNW clients, family offices, or founders preparing for liquidity events, this conversation is worth your time.

A lower barrier to entry into PPLI just opened up!

For 20+ years, EWP Financial's PPLI structures have given high-net-worth families powerful tax advantages, investment flexibility, and asset protection — but the $5M minimum premium kept it out of reach for many.
Enter the Builder Program: a scalable entry point starting at a $1M+ initial premium, with additional contributions as your wealth grows.
What you get:
Tax-deferred growth (no ordinary income tax, capital gains tax, or NIIT drag)
Tax-free retirement income via policy loans — no RMDs, no contribution caps, no early withdrawal penalties
Access to hedge funds, private equity, real estate, and other alternative investments.
Strong creditor protection
Estate planning advantages, including an income-tax-free death benefit
It's designed for entrepreneurs, professionals, and family office stewards who want to build a substantial tax-sheltered nest egg over time — sometimes described as a "Super Roth IRA" at a much larger scale.

New Podcast Episode: PPLI Explained
Wealthy families are always looking for smarter ways to grow assets while minimizing tax exposure — and Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI) is one of the most powerful (and underused) tools out there.
In this episode of LimitlessMD, host Vikram Ryan sits down with Michael Malloy, CLU TEP RFC, Founder & CEO of EWP Financial, to break down how PPLI works as a unique investment vehicle that blends tax planning and estate planning into one strategy.
Michael's journey is fascinating too — he started in property & casualty insurance before carving out a niche in this specialized corner of life insurance that high-net-worth individuals use almost like an "unofficial Roth IRA."
If you work with high-net-worth clients, or you're simply curious about advanced wealth planning strategies, this is worth a listen.
