As we head into September, we reflect on National Black Business Month and why it is so important!

This month long celebration is a reminder that Black entrepreneurship is one of the most powerful engines a community can have. The innovation, resilience, and leadership of Black entrepreneurs, remind us that investing in businesses is also an investment in the communities they serve.

Every business that opens, hires, and reinvests locally is infrastructure for the neighborhood around it. Every entrepreneur that gets the capital they need is a step toward the outcomes the research now clearly connects: more jobs, more wealth, longer lives.

At AmPac, that mission is not seasonal. It is the work. And every time capital reaches an entrepreneur who was told they wouldn’t qualify, a community somewhere gets a little stronger.

Somewhere right now, a business owner is walking out of a bank after being declined for a loan.

The numbers were close. The customers are real, the revenue is real, the lease payment has cleared every month for six years. But the collateral was thin, or the last two tax returns showed uneven years, or the loan was simply too small to justify the underwriting time.

The owner drives back to the shop, and the expansion that would have added four jobs does not happen.

That moment, repeated tens of thousands of times a year across the country, is the reason Community Development Financial Institutions exist.

We are excited to welcome two new members to the AmPac Board of Directors.

Victor Parker brings more than two decades of small business and economic development leadership. Among his many leadership roles and accomplishments, he served 14 years with the U.S. Small Business Administration, most recently as Deputy Associate Administrator in the Office of Field Operations, overseeing 10 regional and 68 district offices. He previously served nine years as District Director of SBA’s Los Angeles District Office, where he built partnerships across Southern California. A 2022 Presidential Rank Award recipient and recipient of SBA’s Dwight D. Eisenhower Award, Victor holds a Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from UC Berkeley. He also serves as a City Planning Commissioner and trustee of the St. Mary’s Long Beach Medical Center Foundation.

Claudia Viek has spent more than 35 years building the infrastructure that helps small businesses start and grow. Among her many leadership roles and accomplishments, she founded the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center and served as CEO of CAMEO, building a statewide network serving 50,000 small and micro businesses annually. She launched the Invest in Women Entrepreneurs Initiative in 2018 and, as State Advocate for the California Women’s Business Center Network, helped grow the state’s Women’s Business Centers from 14 to 21 and secure $8 million in the 2023 State Budget. She has addressed the U.S. Senate Banking Committee and Federal Reserve Board of Governors and is a recipient of SBA’s Champion of Women in Business award.

Victor and Claudia bring decades of leadership to the question we work on every day: how do capital and support reach the businesses that need them? We are grateful they have chosen to serve alongside us.

8:28 is a special day for our AmPac team. It’s a day to come together and build stronger connections across all of our offices. Today, we live out what 8:28 means to us: “For we know all things work together for good to those who love God and to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

As a faith-based CDC, which describes how we serve and not who we lend to, it is especially meaningful to announce on this 8:28 that AmPac has been approved for the SBA 504 Premier Certified Lending Program (PCLP). We are honored by the opportunity and mindful of the stewardship that comes with this responsibility. PCLP authority allows us to expedite loan requests that need attention, helping us better serve our small businesses and lending partners.
