Simply put, rental insurance provides coverage for losses and damages to a renter’s property. It doesn’t cover the actual building in which they’re renting.

Home insurance, on the other hand, provides coverage for losses and damages due to unexpected perils. These are things like flooding, fire, or theft.

Think about your worst case scenario.

This is the annual premium plus the out-of-pocket maximum for each of your insurance options. Once you have this number, you can compare the totals of each policy and find the better deal.

Watch the deductible.

When it comes to insurance, cheaper doesn’t mean better. For example, you might be in a better position to pay a little more for your monthly premiums if it means lower out-of-pocket costs.
