Beware of this latest scam.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – FAKE TRAFFIC CITATIONS & WARRANT SCAMS 🚨

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office wants to make the public aware of fraudulent emails and phone calls designed to scare people into handing over money or personal information.

📧 FAKE TRAFFIC CITATION EMAILS

An email is circulating claiming recipients have been cited for speeding and must pay their citation online within 72 hours.

The email references an alleged speeding violation in the Johannesburg area and directs recipients to an online payment center. It comes from [email protected] and claims all citations must be paid online.

DO NOT click the links, provide personal information, or submit payment through this email. Verify any alleged citation directly with the appropriate court using contact information obtained from an official government website.

📞 WARRANT & PHONE SCAMS

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you and demand money over the phone to take care of a warrant or threaten you into making an immediate payment to avoid arrest.

Scammers can spoof our official phone number (989-732-3555), making it appear as though the call is coming directly from our office. Just because our number appears on your caller ID does NOT mean the call is legitimate.

If you receive a suspicious call claiming you have a warrant or demanding payment:

✅ Take down the name of the person calling you.

✅ Hang up the phone.

✅ Call our office directly at 989-732-3555 and speak with someone to verify the information.

❌ Do not provide financial or personal information to the caller.

❌ Do not send money, purchase gift cards, or make cryptocurrency payments in response to threats over the phone.

Remember: Caller ID can be faked. Always verify before you act.
