We took this photo on top of a mountain in the Smoky Mountains National Park with a famous view on the family portion of our 25th anniversary trip. We saw fog.

That's me, about forty years ago, being marched down the beach by my parents. I could not tell you what that trip cost. I can tell you about the seaweed, the sunburn, and the cross-country trip we still talk about.

That's the part that doesn't show up on a statement. Nobody's kids remember the account balance. They remember who took them somewhere, and who was still healthy enough to come along.

In a lot of marriages, one person quietly owns the finances. It works fine — right up until it doesn't.

I've sat at kitchen tables with a spouse who has never logged into the accounts, doesn't know which bills auto-pay, and is being asked to make big decisions in the worst week of their life. We start small: what comes in, what goes out, what's urgent and what can wait ninety days.

Krista and I talked about this trip for years. For our 25th anniversary, we finally went.

We're no different from the families I work with. It's easy to talk about a trip like this for years. It's harder to actually pick a date, put it on the calendar, and go.

This week I sat down with a family who had done everything right. Hit their goals. Built real wealth. And were still holding back from spending it.

It made me think about how few people actually have a plan for enjoying what they've worked so hard to build.

Another annual tradition in the Cobb house is giving new notebooks to the kids each January 1st. It's a place for them to put their goals individually as well as our family goals and I love the symbolism that a new notebook with a new year brings - a fresh start ready to act!

Each day this week, I'll post about something I love to do as the last calendar page gets flipped over.

For the last several years, we take an evening at the end of the year and look through all of our photos. We pick our favorites and then make a photo book from Shutterfly. We always buy two - one to look through and one to put up in the closet. We've learned that the hard way because these books are some of the most loved books in our home! The kids are always "reading" them and talking about the memories they have made over the years.

It's a quiet few days. But to tell the truth, I love these days. I call them empty parking lot days. I was thinking yesterday that while I worked on the financial health of about 20 families or so - maybe 4 or 5 of them knew I was working for them yesterday. Many others, I was working behind the scenes: evaluating, refining their strategies, planning for future tasks, meetings, and objectives, and looking for blind spots.

I can't say it enough. I simply love my role and what I do for the families I serve.
