Council #11364 Knights of Columbus

Council #11364 Knights of Columbus Holy Cross Knights of Columbus, Omaha, Nebraska, Council #11364 Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action.

Our Principles

All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles:

Charity - Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materiall

y, mothers who choose life for their babies. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity – None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that – together – we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together…we support one another. That doesn’t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that – as a Knight of Columbus – you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Fraternity – The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died – often prematurely. The Order’s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another. Patriotism – Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it’s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.

Dear Brother Knight,
Following the pain, outrage and violence resulting from the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd, I send this message in a spirit of reconciliation, asking you to join me beginning this Sunday — the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity — in praying our Novena for National Unity & An End to Racism.
We should take to heart the words of Pope Francis. No one should “tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism.” We must all “defend the sacredness of every human life.” And we must redouble our efforts to overcome the suffering and injustice which result from the sin of racism. As we celebrate the perfect unity of the Blessed Trinity, we call upon all Knights and people of goodwill to join in prayer. Let us remember that, as Pope Francis says, “nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost.”
Our prayers are inspired by our legacy as Knights of Columbus — may we carry on in the same spirit of unity that has inspired the Order to welcome Catholic men of all backgrounds, regardless of race, from our very beginning. This is especially important as we move forward as “Knights of Columbus: Knights of Unity,” which was the theme of last year’s Supreme Convention.
As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Time is cluttered with the wreckage of broken communities which have surrendered to hatred and violence. For the salvation of our nation and the salvation of mankind, we must follow another way.”
We pray that we all can follow this other way and come to understand that injustice to a black person is injustice to all; that regardless of race or culture, all people, without exception, are made in the image and likeness of God, and are deserving of our respect and love.
Please join me in offering this prayer for national unity and an end to racism. May we pray for the strength to learn from the courageous example of Dr. King and from the leadership of our Holy Father, and continue to work to build a society that recognizes the dignity and brotherhood of all.
As men of faith, let us together confidently turn to prayer during the nine days of this novena, beginning on Sunday, June 7, and concluding on Monday, June 15.
May God, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Civilization of Love, hear our prayer.
Fraternally,
Carl A. Anderson
Supreme Knight

Novena For National Unity
& an End to Racism

Sunday, June 7 –Monday, June 15N

Heavenly Father, you so loved the world that you sent us your only begotten Son as our Redeemer. The Holy Spirit rested upon your Beloved Son as he preached the Good News, cured the sick, and gave his life to break down each sinful barrier that separates us from you and from one another. With your Son, O Father, you sent the
Holy Spirit upon your Church that she might extend your saving truth and love to every race and nation.

So it is that we praise you, O Glorious Trinity, One God in Three Persons, united in one Divine Nature yet distinct in each Person — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As you are united in one Divine Nature, we ask you to bring together in your love all whom hatred and racism have separated. Pour your love into our hearts, that we may speak the truth boldly and in a spirit of charity, and labor unceasingly for justice, peace and reconciliation in our divided nation and world. O Father, source of every blessing, O Son, Radiant Truth, O Spirit of Love, enable us to respect and love those who are different from ourselves and remove from our hearts, our homes, our Church, and our society every trace of racism.

Grant us, in your mercy, renewed and lasting resolve ‘to mend our ways, to encourage one another, to agree with one another, and to live in peace.’ (cf. 2 Cor 13:11) Grant us the wisdom to create a civilization of truth, justice and love, worthy of your Kingdom. Then we shall know that you are truly with us, O God of life, truth and
love, living and reigning forever and ever. Amen.

Jim,

You have asked me a few times about initiatives or needs for the school. One of the exciting new initiatives we are planning is the creation of a Maker's Space. The idea of a Maker's Space is that kids will be given time and materials to explore and create things that might interest them. As you can imagine, this is a great opportunity to learn using the scientific process in action!

It is our hope to create a Maker's Space at HC. My thought is to start small and grow the program as interest and funding become available. I have selected the following areas to begin with:

1. Little Bits--Little Bits are single electronic modules that the students snap together (they are magnetic). Students can create and control motion, light and sound using these amazing little modules. Because we need a few basic kits and the miscellaneous add-ons, The initial investment for this segment of the Maker's Space is $605.

2. Sewing Corner--I would like to purchase two basic sewing machines, a few simple patterns, material, and supplies to facilitate the interest any student may have in sewing or fashion. The initial investment for this segment of Maker's Space is $450.

3. Tear it Down, Build it Up--This station doesn't require as much in terms of materials because much of it will be donated. Students will be encouraged to take apart computers, cell phones and other devices and then put them back together (with the intent of making it work again). Basic materials are needed for this, including screw driver sets and magnet mats (to hold the little screws, etc). The initial investment for this segment of Maker's Space is $190.

4. Sound and Programming--This station would encourage the students to learn about programming and using electronics to create sound and motion. The two tools I would like to start with are called Makey, Makey and Picoboard. The initial investment for this segment of Maker's Space is $380.

This is just a start! The implications of a program like this are great. I am excited to give our students the opportunity to begin this hands-on experience. Right now, the plans are to offer this as an after school opportunity. However, there are certainly many in-class benefits to using the materials as well.

Is an initiative like this something that the Knights of Columbus might want to help fund?

I'd be happy to have further conversation with you about the program or the individual elements.

Thanks so much for the consideration. Have a great day!!
