Q: My roommate has renters insurance. Does that mean my belongings are covered too?

A: Not necessarily!

Renters insurance typically covers the people listed on the policy or otherwise insured under it. Simply living with someone who has renters insurance doesn't automatically mean your belongings or personal liability are covered.

💧 Dealing With Flooding or Water Damage? Here Are a Few Things to Know

Recent flooding has left many people in our community dealing with water damage to their homes, vehicles, and belongings. If you've been affected, we hope you and your family are safe.

When it's safe to do so, a few steps can help as you begin dealing with the damage:
📸 Document the damage. Take photos and videos before moving or disposing of damaged items, when possible.
📞 Contact your insurance agent or carrier. Report the damage and ask about the next steps for your specific policy.
🧾 Keep records and receipts. Save documentation for cleanup, temporary repairs, and other damage-related expenses.
⚠️ Put safety first. Avoid standing water near electrical sources, and don't enter areas that may be structurally unsafe.

Not all types of water damage are covered the same way. Standard homeowners and renters insurance policies generally do not cover flooding caused by rising surface water. Flood insurance is typically separate coverage. Other types of sudden water damage may be handled differently depending on your policy and the cause of the loss.

Please prepare and do what you can to get water AWAY from your foundation. Check those downspouts, check for grading away from your home.

Showers and storms with heavy rainfall are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainfall totals could range from 2 to 4 inches by late Thursday and result in some flooding of low lying areas/roadways, and rapid rises on rivers and streams. Remember, turn around don't drown!
