Think bonds are going to save your bacon because the stock market is bad? Maybe not. The Wall Street Journal states this is the worst bond market since 1843. Yup, in almost 200 years according to Financial Advisor.

Hey, take a look at my SQMF:

Various stock market indexes are down this year. As an investor negative returns are not fun. What can you do? Some investors are buying bonds in their accounts for the perceived safety and perceived less volatility of fixed income investments. Is that a good idea? Depends on how you look at returns...

Sandy’s Quick Market Fact

You Missed a Good One!
But It May Not Be Too Late

Did you know that there is a way to easily report those eternally annoying and potentially dangerous spam/robot calls?
That 40% of Nebraskans were hit by a security breach at a major company a while ago?
Which gas stations to avoid using to fill your tank?
Why to keep a clean machine?
Why those new “touchless” credit cards may be better?
Why a hard freeze is good?

I hosted a Zoom call last Friday afternoon with Ryan Sothan of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. He discussed these topics and more. He suggests all of us, not just over age 65, go to ProtectTheGoodLife.Nebraska.gov/brochures and click on Identity Theft, A Consumer Guide to learn how to protect ourselves. He says page 19 is especially important.

I will be glad to provide more Zoom calls. If you have a topic you’d like to see covered, just let me know. You can call me or my assistant, Gina, at (402) 955-1033, or e-mail me at [email protected]

The Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office protects Nebraskans from unfair, unconscionable and deceptive trade practices, ensures fair competition between businesses, and is responsible for oversight of charitable assets and entities.

A neighbor told me she recently received a phone call from Publishers Clearing House Association of North America. The call said she had won $2.5 million and a 2021 Mercedes.
My neighbor knew it was “too good to be true,” but she called the number left in the message anyway. To get the new car and money all she had to do was go to Walmart or Walgreens and buy a $500 gift card. She was then supposed to give the gift card to someone working for the company that called her. That person would call their car delivery people who conveniently happened to be nearby. A new Mercedes would soon arrive. She didn’t ask how the $2.5 million would show up in her checking account.

Would someone you know fall for a scam like that? It’s that time of the year when “get rich quick scams” start popping up. This year many of us won’t be with our older loved ones and friends because of COVID-19. But, we can still show them we care by alerting them to scams and watching out for their wellbeing. The same watchfulness may also apply to others trying to take advantage of an older person’s finances.

Join me Friday, December 18 at 2 p.m., for a zoom with Ryan Sothan of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. He will alert us to what nefarious tricks are popping up this year, some of which may be linked to COVID-19. See the Zoom link below.

Besides joining the Zoom yourself, you might also invite a relative or neighbor to watch with you so they’ll know what’s going on first hand.

Topic: Scams and Protecting Elders
Time: Friday, December 18, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. CST

Please call my assistant Gina at 402-390-3038 to reserve your spot for the Zoom cast and receive the Meeting ID and the Password.

Ryan Sothan is not affiliated with Stifel.
