Let’s do some math… particularly math on bonds or your “safe” investments

Potential return (or loss) comes from three variables:

1. Manager skill- some professionals that choose bond investments are better than others. Some bond investments don’t have a manager. So do they add value?
2. Movements in rates- it’s an inverse relationship. Rates go up = value of that bond goes down and Vice versa
3. Yield or Income- income is already so low there’s no cushion to absorb the effects of any variables changing

So basic math leads you to negative outcome any way you look at it, especially when rates start to rise this year.

What makes this worse is that people think of bonds as an investment for their safe money. Right now it’s a set up for a loss
