🏠 Buying a Home Through Rent-to-Own? Don’t Overlook the Insurance.

Rent-to-own agreements can create some confusion when it comes to who is responsible for insuring the home.

In most situations, the person who still legally owns the property carries the homeowners or dwelling insurance policy until ownership officially transfers.

But that doesn’t mean the renter/buyer is fully protected.

The owner’s policy generally protects the building and the owner’s financial interest — not necessarily your:

* Furniture and personal belongings
* Electronics and clothing
* Personal liability
* Additional living expenses after a covered loss

That’s why the renter/buyer may still need a renters insurance policy while they’re working toward ownership.

⚠️ And rent-to-own agreements can vary. Your contract may spell out specific insurance requirements for both parties, so it’s important to understand those requirements before assuming you’re covered.
