Here is the part most people get wrong. Collision coverage pays to repair your car. It does not pay your hospital bill. That is uninsured motorist coverage. It is a separate line on your policy with its own limit, and most folks have never looked at that number.

Pull up your declarations page before the weekend. Find the line that says uninsured motorist. If the number surprises you, that is worth a conversation.
