Scam Alert ❗ After being arrested in Johnson County, an individual received an unexpected call Saturday from someone posing as an official from the JoCo Department of Corrections’ House Arrest program. The caller instructed them to set it up immediately and pay an upfront fee through Apple Pay.
Since individuals in the justice system may interact with multiple agencies, scammers exploit this by posing as representatives of different agencies. We’re partnering with the Department of Corrections to help our residents recognize common scam patterns.
Red flags:
• Fear or panic tactics, especially urgent deadlines outside normal business hours.
• Demanding payment through Bitcoin, gift cards, or money transfer apps.
• Threatening jail, fees, or warrants if you don’t pay immediately.
• Refusing to let you hang up or insisting you only call them back using the number they provide, not publicly listed numbers.
What to do:
• If someone demands immediate payment over the phone, pause.
• Ask for their name, agency, and phone number, then hang up.
• Call a publicly listed phone number from the agency they claim to be from to confirm the situation.
• JCSO non‑emergency dispatch is available 24/7 at (913) 782-0720.
