What’s happening right now is heartbreaking. Being told to evacuate your home on such short notice is something no one should have to experience, and I can’t imagine how overwhelming this must be for you and your family.

If you have a renters insurance policy, you may have something called Loss of Use or Additional Living Expenses coverage. This benefit is intended to help with temporary housing, meals, and other extra costs if your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event.

That said—every insurance company has different guidelines. This situation may or may not qualify depending on the cause of the displacement and the specifics of your policy.
