"Labor Omnia Vincit"

The official motto of Oklahoma meaning "work conquers all things” (6 years of taking Latin in school paid off…)

A nice day to take a break from working and enjoy some rest and relaxation. A morning walk and a home made cappuccino on the back porch.

What are you thankful for today?

“No day shall erase you from the memory of time” Virgil

It’s hard to believe September 11th was 23 years ago. I vividly remember where I was: working for a telecommunications company in the Dallas area and watching the event unfold on TV.

Earlier this year our family visited the 9-11 Memorial. Seeing the enormity of the site and how it’s curated was important to me. It really brings home the tragedy and sacrifices made.

The Virgil quote on the mosaic wall struck me as telling and appropriate.

Do you remember where you were on 9/11?

“Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die? And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round”

Did you know this is Oklahoma’s official rock song?!?

Our Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt declared this weekend Flaming Lips Weekend and we heard the call!

It’s the Flaming Lips 40th anniversary and they played “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots” and “The Soft Bulletin” in their entirety along with a mix of other songs.

It was my 8th time seeing The Lips live and they did not disappoint. They’ve gone from an indie DIY Punk Metal band to picking up the style mantle of The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

I admire their longevity, advocacy for Oklahoma and them staying put in Oklahoma as their home base.

It’s been fun to see their lead singer Wayne Coyne out and about over the years.

“Don't know what you got 'til it's gone” Cinderella

Musings of two weeks of short term disability…

1 - Resilience: I had left shoulder surgery a few weeks ago. They say it’s one of the most difficult surgeries which I can attest to as the only other surgery I’ve had was right shoulder surgery a few years ago. It’s hard to be down for the count missing work and exercise. Every day now is one day closer to recovery. Statue is from a walk this evening at Mitch Park in Edmond (one of my favorite running/walking trails) while at my son’s soccer practice.

2 - What’s important: It got me thinking a lot about health/wealth/family all critical aspects of one’s life that sometimes are in sync and when not easy to take for granted.

3 - Gratefulness: Glad that short term disability is exists and that Charles Schwab offers such a safety net for employees.

4 - Bedside manners: My surgery team did a pre surgery check in. They answered all my questions and helped me feel reassured prior to the surgery. I have been in the Mercy system for a while and being at a Catholic hospital gave me some comfort. Faith is important to me and having a chaplain come by and pray with me helped me a lot. My dad who’s a retired Internist practiced at a Catholic hospital for years and being in such a system was of comfort.

“The harder the conflict, the greater the triumph” George Washington

Over our recent family vacation I was able to visit Valley Forge Pennsylvania for the first time and Mount Vernon again two locations seminal in George Washington’s life. As a history/english major I enjoy seeing in person locations important in US history.

I admire some of Washington’s traits such as character, leadership and bravery.

Happy Valentine’s Day! My favorite Valentines tradition is to pick up my favorite chocolate at the See’s candy store and enjoy with my wife and Valentine of 26 years.

A good factoid for you:

Saint Valentine: 3rd Century Roman Saint. Lived 226-269. His Saint’s Day associated with courtly love. He’s also known as the patron saint of Terni Italy, epilepsy and beekeepers.

Your favorite tradition for today?
