We asked our team: Can you share an example of how the Plains Ventures process has impacted an investment decision?

Justin Wilson, President & Managing Director, told us:
"In venture, we see dozens, sometimes hundreds, of opportunities for every one that's actually a fit. That doesn't mean most of them are bad companies. It usually just means the stage, valuation, or inflection point doesn't match our fund's mandate or return needs.

Even when we don't invest, the process itself can be valuable. Founders regularly tell us our diligence surfaced issues they didn't know existed, sometimes something minor and easy to fix, like discovering they aren't authorized to do business in the state they're operating in (more common than you'd think). Other times it's something more serious. Almost none of it is intentional; usually it's just an oversight that never got caught."

Not every deal ends in an investment, but it can still end in a better business.

Catching Alzheimer's before symptoms appear. That's the goal, and our portfolio company Moleculera Biosciences is closer to making it a reality.

Moleculera and partner Lunai Bioworks are developing a first-of-its-kind blood test to identify immune-mediated Alzheimer's disease at the earliest possible stage, before patients even know something is wrong. The alliance combines Moleculera's biomarker science with the AI-driven analytics platform from Lunai's subsidiary, BioSymetrics.

The partnership received a significant boost: Lunai closed a $20M transaction last year to acquire blood-brain barrier delivery technology and Alzheimer's CNS drug assets, directly advancing the pipeline the two companies are building together.

Portfolio milestone: Progentec Diagnostics.

Progentec published peer-reviewed research in Lupus Science & Medicine and secured an Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST) Industry Innovation Grant — both major milestones validating the science and commercial potential behind their lupus classification risk blood test.

The L-CRI (Lupus Classification Risk Immune Index) represents a meaningful advancement in early diagnostics, with the potential to identify at-risk patients long before clinical disease classification.

Scientific validation + non-dilutive funding = strong momentum. We're proud to back the team at Progentec.
