In the aftermath of Hurricane Isaias, homeowners may be faced with unexpected repairs and important decisions about their property. Unfortunately, this is also a time when fraudulent contractors and scammers may try to take advantage of those recovering from storm damage.

As you begin assessing damage and arranging repairs, here are a few ways to protect yourself:

• Verify credentials. Check that contractors are properly licensed and insured before agreeing to any work.
• Be cautious of unsolicited offers. Be wary of anyone who shows up uninvited, pressures you to make an immediate decision or promises repairs that seem too good to be true.
• Review before you sign. Read contracts carefully and be especially cautious of documents that transfer your insurance benefits or rights to a third party.
• Avoid large upfront payments. Be cautious of contractors demanding substantial payment before work begins, and never pay the full amount before the work is completed.
• Protect your personal information. Never share your policy number, banking details or other sensitive information with someone whose identity you haven't verified.
