• Never leave cooking or heating equipment unattended, and keep flammable items at least three feet from heat sources.
• Test smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries as needed, and replace alarms that are 10 years old or older.
• Create and practice a fire escape plan with two exits from each room and a designated outdoor meeting place.
• Keep a fire extinguisher accessible and remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
• Avoid overloading outlets, inspect cords for damage, and turn off appliances before leaving or going to bed.
