The ’s met on April 29, 2026, and held the steady for the third consecutive meeting. Policymakers remain cautious about , particularly as geopolitical tensions in Iran continue to drive volatility in oil, natural gas, helium (a key input in semiconductor manufacturing), and fertilizer prices.
With U.S. still expanding at an annualized rate of 2.0% in the first quarter of 2026, the Fed appears in no rush to ease policy. As a result, are unlikely in 2026 and may not materialize until well into 2027.

Despite the war in Iran, we're not headed into a , but will be with us for months to come. March headline increased by 3.3%, the highest since 2022, and core CPI increased by 2.6%, year-over year, still above the Fed's 2.0% inflation target and expected to go higher in the coming months. That's more reason for the Fed's to do nothing to its overnight for the rest of the year, including at its next meeting on April 29, 2026.

How might the war in Iran affect the and the ’s upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday, March 18?

Rising oil and gas prices are already putting upward pressure on . While the February 2026 increased a modest 2.4% year-over-year (2.5% excluding food and energy), the Fed’s preferred measure—the January 2026 index—rose 2.8% overall and 3.1% excluding food and energy. Importantly, these figures likely do not yet fully reflect the recent surge in prices.
At the same time, the lost 92,000 nonfarm jobs last month, and 4Q 2025 growth was revised down from 1.4% to 0.7% annualized. Given this combination of geopolitical uncertainty and potential inflation pressures, we expect the Fed to hold rates steady at its March 18 and April 29 meetings while it assesses the inflationary impact of higher energy prices.

As the enters its 35th day, there have been no real released from the US government, other than update on which to base annual benefit increases. However, from what we observe from the Fed Open Market Committee members' speeches, the is still doing pretty well, despite the weakening slightly and going a little too high. Therefore, until the reopens and starts producing economic data, we don't expect the Fed to cut the overnight at its next meeting on December 10, 2025. might be kept steady for a while.
