Good afternoon State Farm Family! We are continuing our Black History month highlights with another staff pick. Ruby Miller State Farm team member Marysha chose Grammy Award winning vocalist Jessye Norman. Marysha was inspired by Norman’s powerful performances (Specifically her performance as Dido in Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas!) and her refusal to be restricted to one range of voice. Norman famously said “As for my voice, it cannot be categorized - and I like it that way...”
Born in 1945 in Augusta, GA, Jessye Norman began singing publicly at age 4. She credits her introduction to opera to weekly Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts featuring popular artists, including trailblazing black vocalists Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price. Norman received vocal coaching throughout her childhood, and during her studies at Howard University, The Peabody Conservatory, and the University of Michigan. Over her more than 46 year career, Norman received numerous awards and recognitions. She performed for two Presidential inaugurations, Reagan in 1985 and Clinton in 1997. Norman was also invited to sing for Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th birthday in 1986, the 1996 Summer Olympics, and the unveiling of the monumental columns of light at the World Trade Center site in 2002. In 2009 she was awarded the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence, The National Medal of Arts. Jessye Norman continued to perform until 2015 when she suffered a spinal chord injury that led to her death in 2019.
Video of Norman performing “Dido’s Lament” from “Dido and Aeneas” is available on YouTube.
