Most people don’t realize how quickly a liability situation can get expensive. A fender bender with injuries, a guest slipping at your home, or a mistake behind the wheel can turn into costs that go way beyond what you expect.

That’s where an umbrella policy can help. It adds an extra layer of liability protection on top of your home and auto policies, designed to kick in when those limits are used up.

You might want to look at an umbrella policy if you:

• Have a teen driver (or multiple drivers in the household)
• Own a home and regularly have guests over
• Have a pool, trampoline, or other “fun but higher-risk” items
• Own rental property or a second home
• Have a dog (especially larger breeds)
• Coach/volunteer, sit on a board, or are active in the community
• Have savings/assets you’d want to protect

If you want to see whether an umbrella makes sense for your situation, message me. I’m happy to walk through a few quick questions and run numbers.

Earth Day is a good reminder that small choices add up, especially the ones that protect what you’ve worked hard for.

If you’re doing a spring clean-out, shred old paperwork with personal info, safely dispose of electronics, and take 10 minutes to check your smoke/CO detectors. Those simple steps help protect you and your home.

And if you’ve made any “green upgrades” lately (solar panels, EV charger, new roof/windows, renovations), it’s worth a quick insurance check to make sure your home coverage still matches what you have today.

Happy Earth Day. What’s one small change you’re making this year?

Is moving in your future? Whether it’s to a new city or across town, a solid to-do list makes the whole thing feel less stressful and a lot less chaotic. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

📦 Create a home inventory (quick video walk-through counts)
📦 Label and count boxes (and keep essentials in one “open first” box)
📦 Get estimates for movers (if needed)
📦 Contact utility companies and schedule shutoff/start dates
📦 Update your address with banks, subscriptions, and your employer
📦 Update vehicle insurance and registration
📦 Learn the new city/neighborhood before moving day

Insurance tip: moving is one of those times when coverage details matter. Depending on how you’re moving (DIY vs movers), your belongings may or may not be covered the way you think. It’s also a good time to confirm your new address, update your home/renter’s policy, and make sure your auto policy reflects where the car will be garaged.

This article has a helpful breakdown of moving insurance and adds six more great checklist ideas:

Life insurance isn’t about being dramatic. It’s about being prepared.

If something happened tomorrow, would your family be able to:

• Keep up with the mortgage or rent?
• Cover everyday bills and childcare?
• Pay off debts without draining savings?
• Keep future plans (like college) on track?

Life changes fast, and your coverage should keep up. If it’s been a while since you reviewed what you have (or you’ve never looked at it), April is a great time for a simple check-in to make sure it still fits your life today.

Tax season is prime time for scams. The IRS even includes phishing emails and “smishing” text messages (texts pretending to be from the IRS) on its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of top tax scams.

A few quick reminders to protect yourself:

• Be suspicious of urgent messages about refunds, payments, or “verification”
• Don’t click links or open attachments from unknown senders
• Never share personal info by text or DM
• If you’re unsure, go directly to https://st8.fm/4s73X66 or contact your tax pro using a trusted number (not the one in the message)

A little caution now can save a big headache later.

Spring weather is moody. One day it’s sunny, the next it pours, and the roads are full of potholes, construction, and distracted drivers.

Here are a few quick reminders that can save you a lot of hassle:

• Slow down in the rain (slick roads = longer stopping distance)
• Replace worn wiper blades and check your headlights
• Watch for standing water and hydroplaning
• Give yourself extra space in stop-and-go traffic
• Keep an eye out for potholes and road debris

And if you’ve had any life changes lately (new car, teen driver, longer commute, rideshare/delivery, etc.), spring is a great time for a quick auto policy check to make sure your coverage still matches how you’re actually driving.

It’s Misconception Monday. Today’s myth: “No-Fault” homeowners’ insurance 🏠

“No-fault” is a term you’ll hear a lot with auto insurance (it’s about how certain injury/medical payments are handled after a car accident). With homeowners' insurance, it doesn’t work that way exactly.

Most issues that come up with someone's house aren’t something you caused on purpose (wind, hail, theft, a pipe bursting, etc.). But here’s the key: even if it wasn’t your “fault,” it’s still your home and your policy.

The better way to think about home insurance is:
- What causes are covered (fire, wind, hail, theft, etc.)
- What maintenance/prevention is expected (to reduce avoidable losses)

A few simple ways to lower your risk:
❌ Don’t leave candles unattended
✅ Use a security system or smart cameras
✅ Keep the heat consistent in freezing temps to help prevent frozen pipes
✅ After heavy snow, safely clear buildup if needed (or hire it out)

Want to make sure you’re protected and understand what your policy actually does?

April Fool’s Day is a great reminder that “I’ll deal with it later” is not a real plan.

Most of us don’t look at our insurance until something changes, or something goes wrong. But a quick check now can save a lot of stress later.

A few things worth reviewing this month:

• Deductibles (would that number hurt if you had to pay it tomorrow?)
• Liability limits (are they still enough for your life today?)
• Beneficiaries (still the right people?)
• Big changes: new car, new driver, renovations, a move, a side hustle

Future you will be very grateful you handled it before it turned into a “surprise.”

If a fire strikes in your home, there’s only a short time to react. Preparing your family with safe escape routes and instructions can be a lifesaver in an emergency.

How to make a fire escape plan: 🔥➡️

● Sketch a map of your house.
● Familiarize your children with the map by pointing out where each room in the house is. Pasting a photo of each family member inside their respective bedroom on the map may help younger children.
● Draw two escape routes from each room — one out a door, one out a window (in case the primary route is blocked).
● Designate a meeting spot outside the house, such as the mailbox, and mark it on the map so everyone knows.
● Post the evacuation plan on the refrigerator or a bulletin board to help keep it fresh in your family's mind.
