šŸ  3 Home Insurance Deductibles to Know

Most homeowners know they have a deductible—but did you know you may encounter more than one type?

Here are three worth understanding:
1. Standard Deductible This is the fixed dollar amount you pay toward most covered claims before your insurance pays its portion. Common examples might be $500, $1,000 or $2,500.

2. Percentage Deductible Instead of a set dollar amount, this deductible is calculated as a percentage of your home’s insured value. These are sometimes used for losses involving wind or hail.
For example, a 2% deductible on a home insured for $400,000 would equal $8,000 out of pocket—which is why it’s important to know what your policy says.

3. Disaster or Specialty Deductibles Coverage for events such as floods or earthquakes may be handled through separate policies, and those policies can have their own deductibles and rules.

The important takeaway? Don’t wait until you have a claim to find out what your deductible is.

Take a few minutes to review your policy and understand how much you could be responsible for if something happens.

Not sure what deductibles apply to your home? BWO Insurance can help you review your coverage and understand what to expect before you ever need to file a claim.

E-bikes are a fun way to explore your city and enjoy the last stretch of summer—but where do they fit when it comes to insurance? 🚲⚔

Although an e-bike may look like a traditional bicycle, its motor, speed and value can affect how it is classified and covered. Wisconsin recognizes three classes of e-bikes, and Class 3 models can provide assistance at speeds of up to 28 mph.

Before heading out, make sure you know:
• Whether your home or renters policy covers theft or damage
• Whether you have liability protection if you injure someone or damage property
• Whether the bike’s class, motor or maximum speed creates a coverage limitation
• Whether an endorsement or separate specialty policy may be needed

Do not assume your homeowners, renters or auto policy automatically provides all the protection you need. Coverage can vary significantly based on the e-bike and the specific policy.

Already own an e-bike—or considering buying one? Talk with BWO Insurance before your next ride so you can enjoy the road with fewer surprises. Coverage varies by carrier and policy. Contact your agent for advice specific to your situation.

Your home may be smart—but is your insurance keeping up?

Smart doorbells, locks, cameras, thermostats, and other connected devices make life more convenient. They can also create new risks that a standard homeowners or renters policy may not automatically address.

A few insurance questions worth asking:

• Would my policy help after identity theft or online fraud?
• Is data recovery covered after a cyberattack?
• Is protection available for cyber extortion or ransomware?
• What happens if someone accesses my smart lock, camera or home network?
• Are there coverage limits, exclusions or deductibles for cyber-related claims?
• Would I need a personal cyber endorsement or separate policy?

Good digital habits still matter. Use unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication, update devices regularly and change default login information.

A smart home should also have smart protection.

What gets stolen more often than people realize? šŸŽ£ 🚲 🚣

Summer equipment is often left in driveways, storage lots, garages, campsites or on job sites—making it an easy target for theft.

Commonly stolen items include:

• Trailers
• Boats
• Kayaks
• Golf carts
• Lawn equipment

A few extra precautions can help:

• Use hitch, wheel and cable locks
• Store equipment out of sight when possible
• Add motion lighting or security cameras
• Record serial numbers and take photos
• Review where and how your insurance covers each item

Bonus: What summer item is stolen most often? 🚲

Bicycles stand out as one of the most frequently stolen warm-weather items. Recent research estimates that millions of bikes are stolen annually in the U.S., and many of those thefts happen in residential areas.

Lock bikes to a fixed object through the frame, store them indoors when possible, and keep the serial number somewhere safe.

A few extra security measures—and a quick insurance review—can go a long way. Contact BWO Insurance to make sure your summer gear is properly protected.

Should your adult child still be on your auto policy? šŸš—

Turning 18, graduating or becoming financially independent does not automatically determine when someone needs their own auto insurance. The answer usually depends on where they live, who owns the vehicle and how regularly they drive it.

Your child may still belong on the family policy if they:
• Live in your household
• Are temporarily away at college
• Regularly drive a vehicle you own
Return home during school breaks

It may be time to discuss a separate policy if they:
• Have permanently moved to a new address
• Purchased and titled a vehicle in their own name
• Are establishing a separate household
• No longer regularly drive your vehicles

Do not remove a driver or change the vehicle’s address without talking to your insurance agent first. An outdated address, vehicle owner or household-driver list could create complications if a claim occurs.

Every family’s situation is different. BWO Insurance can help determine when it makes sense to stay on the family policy—and when it is time for a young driver to establish coverage of their own.

The laptop, bike and TV are heading to college—but is the coverage going with them? šŸŽ“šŸ“¦

Where a student lives can make a difference. Students living in a campus dorm may have some coverage for their belongings through a parent’s homeowners or renters policy. However, limits and exclusions may apply—especially for higher-value items such as laptops, electronics, or bicycles.

Students renting an off-campus apartment or house may need their own renters insurance. The landlord’s policy typically protects the building, not the student’s personal belongings. A renters policy may also provide liability protection and help with temporary living expenses after a covered loss.

Before move-in day:
• Ask how the student’s living arrangement affects coverage
• Check the limits for electronics, bicycles and other valuables
• Photograph belongings and save important receipts
• Update the policy if the student moves during the school year

A quick coverage conversation now can help prevent an expensive surprise later.

Many small businesses start as side hustles—but their insurance doesn’t always keep pace.

Once you’re selling regularly, meeting clients or using equipment, personal policies may not cover every business-related risk.

A few questions to ask:
• Are your tools, equipment or inventory covered?
• What happens if a client gets hurt or claims damage?
• Are you using your vehicle for business purposes?
• Does working from home change your coverage needs?
• Would a small business policy make more sense?

As your side hustle grows, your insurance should grow with it.

If your ā€œlittle extra incomeā€ is starting to feel more like a real business, BWO Insurance can help you understand your options and identify any coverage gaps.
