I’m pleased to have contributed expert insight to a recent Credible article on an important homeowner question: How much homeowners insurance do I need?
The answer is about more than choosing a dollar amount. Homeowners should understand how their policy responds to different causes of loss, whether their home is insured to an appropriate rebuilding value, and which gaps may require optional coverage.
One key distinction is named-perils versus open-perils coverage. As I shared in the article: named perils cover only the causes of loss specifically listed in the policy, while open perils cover losses unless they are specifically excluded.
It is also worth reviewing often-overlooked options such as water and sewer backup, sump-pump failure, service-line coverage, ordinance or law coverage, and extended replacement-cost protection.
