General information

The Glass Mansion is the home of J. Wood Glass and Eva Payne Glass, an early day Nowata family. Mr. Glass was a pioneer in the developement of the Nowata oil fields and one of the founders of the State Federal Savings and Loan and the Victory National Bank. Eva Payne Glass had degrees in music and elocution and taught these classes in Nowata following the death of her first husband. Eva was also one of the founders of La Kee Kon Garden Club in 1903. Along with Eva's daughter from her first marriage, Ernest Francis Embry, J. Wood and Eva also had a son, Julian Wood Glass, Jr. who developed a love for art, literature, and world travel. In his travels he found many treasures which he sent home to his mother, and they can still be seen today. The house is filled with the original antiques as it was upon the death of Mrs. Glass at the age of 101. John Duncan Forsyth (Scottish Architect who designed the Marland Mansion in Ponca City Oklahoma) designed and directed the building of the home for the Glass family in 1933. Upon the death of Julian Wood Glass, Jr. in 1992, the house was given to the Nowata Historical Society in honor of his parents. The Historical Society decorates the house for Christmas each year and hosts an open house for the public to enjoy. This gracious home and grounds are available to make special occasions more memorable. Available for weddings, anniversaries, meetings, parties, dinners, etc.
