A dentist injures their hand. Surgery is successful but recovery takes eight months. The practice has overhead, staff payroll, and lease payments due every month. There's no income coming in.

For most dentists, their ability to work chairside is the entire revenue engine of the practice. Disability insurance protects that — but the details matter. Standard individual disability policies may not account for business overhead, and many dentists carrying older policies are insured at income levels that no longer reflect what they actually earn.

Own-occupation coverage is the standard to look for — it pays out if you can no longer perform your specific duties as a dentist, even if you could technically work in another capacity.

When did you last look at your disability coverage limits? If your income has grown since you took the policy out, there's a good chance you're underinsured.

A patient files a complaint two years after a procedure. You've changed carriers since then. Your new policy only covers claims going forward. That old claim? Nobody's picking it up.

Most dentists know they need malpractice coverage — fewer pay close attention to how it's structured. Claims-made vs. occurrence, prior acts coverage, whether associates and hygienists practicing under your roof are actually included — these details matter enormously when a claim arrives.

The policy exists. The question is whether it's built to actually respond when you need it to. If you're not certain how your malpractice coverage is structured, that's a conversation worth having with your broker. We review dental practices regularly and it's one of the first things we look at.
