WHAT DOES A FARMER DO ALL DAY?

Central Springs-Manly kindergartners found out that a farmer's work is never done. Not only do they have to tend to their livestock, by feeding, keeping their housing clean & dry, making sure that they stay healthy, but they also plant and harvest crops to be feed to their livestock or take to market. Farmers put in long hours to get this done all day every day.

Thank you to Laura Cunningham for presenting about beef, Christianson Farms for presenting about pigs and Eric Dirksen for presenting dairy. Without you we wouldn't have food to eat.

WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Northwood-Kensett kindergartners got to experience what it's like to be a beef farmer at Doug & Julie Wallin's farm. Brian Wallin, Doug & Julie's son talked to the students about how to raise beef, he showed them where they eat and sleep, what they eat and how they grow the food cows eat. The students also got to sit in a tractor and talked about how a tractor is used year-round and the different uses.

Worth County Cattlemen & Worth County Farm Bureau wanted to promote Beef Month and provided a hamburger lunch for all the students, teachers and chaperones.

Thank you to the Wallins for sharing your knowledge of beef and farming.

N-K KINDERGARTNERS EXPERIENCE LIFE ON A DAIRY FARM

Northwood-Kensett kindergartners got to experience what it's like to be a dairy farmer at Linda, Steven and Michelle Medlangs' dairy farm. Students saw the dairy cows getting milked, and what you have to do before you put the milking machine on them. Steven and Linda talked about what the cows eat and drink, how often they are milked, where they sleep and what they do to keep the cows healthy. Michelle talked to the students about the dairy calves. Some got to feed baby calves and pet them, they saw the food they will eat when they get old enough, the houses they live in for a short time before going to the pasture. Before leaving everyone got a glass of milk and a string cheese.

Thank you Linda, Steven, and Michelle for your hospitality.

WCFB DONATES BOOKS TO LIBRARIES

Worth County Farm Bureau purchased the 2026 American Farm Bureau Book of the Year to donate to the Northwood-Kensett and Central Springs/Manly elementary libraries. Deanna Katcher, N-K and Laura Fritz, CS accepted the books to add to their libraries.

I Love Blueberries is about growing blueberries in a classroom using hydroponics and how the students worked with community helpers to help make this happen.

Watch for updates as the county libraries will have new books donated to their libraries also.

N-K AND CS KINDERGARTNERS HOST A HATCH PARTY

Northwood-Kensett and Central Springs/Manly kindergarteners recently held a chick birthday party for their baby chicks that hatched in their classrooms. The students were so excited to tell Worth County Farm Bureau Outreach Coordinator, Teresa Stehn about the chicks hatching, how noisy they could be, how they looked when born and a day later the change, how they liked to run and names that they had picked out for them.
The students all got to hold them and say goodbye before going to the farm. Everyone celebrated with a treat and sang Happy Birthday to the chicks.

DO FLOWERS REALLY TALK?

Northwood-Kensett third graders wrapped up their plant unit with a book called Flower Talk read to them by Teresa Stehn, Worth County Outreach Coordinator. The story read came from the perspective of a plant and talked about what is needed for them to grow and continue to grow year after year. Some plants may only grow for a year, but seeds are produced to be able to grow them again the next year. Some plants will come back year after year.

Students learned that pollination is what makes this possible and that certain colors of plants attract different insects and animals to help with pollination.

The students had planted flower seeds a couple of weeks before this and some grew and some didn t. We talked about how similar it is when the farmer plants his seeds. Too much water or not enough, sun/heat is needed, even the soil can make a difference.

It was a great lesson to teach the students about how gardeners and farmers are similar.
