I drove up to the state capitol yesterday with one goal in mind.
I wanted to sit down with our state insurance director and ask a direct question. Other states are taking action against Medicare Advantage companies for hiding plans, pulling commissions, and steering seniors.
Would South Carolina join them or wait on the sidelines?
I met with Representative Mark Smith at the State House, and he brought me in to speak with Director Michael Wise. I showed him the documents from Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and several others. He admitted he had not seen the full picture. The letter he received from our national trade group had left out most of what was actually happening.
We talked about the role of agents and how the state already polices us if we mislead a senior. I asked him why that same responsibility should not apply to a carrier that hides approved plans or changes the rules in the middle of the season. He paused for a moment and told me I had a point.
South Carolina has not announced any action yet, but the door is now open. I left that meeting more convinced than ever that we cannot wait for someone else to push this issue. Seniors in every state deserve honest access to approved plans.
I recorded a full video that explains everything in detail, including what each state has done.
