Big Medicare News: GLP-1 Medications May Soon Be More Affordable for Seniors

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, which is expected to begin July 1, 2026.

For eligible Medicare beneficiaries, certain GLP-1 medications used for weight management (such as Wegovy® and Zepbound®) may be available for a flat $50 monthly cost through a temporary demonstration program.

A few important things seniors should know:
- This is not automatic enrollment — beneficiaries must qualify.
- A doctor must determine medical appropriateness and submit a prior authorization request.
- You must have Medicare Part D coverage (standalone prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage drug plan).
- The program is temporary and currently expected to run through December 31, 2027. Not everyone will qualify — eligibility is based on specific medical criteria.

As always with Medicare, the headline sounds simple… but the details matter. Understanding whether something is covered, how it interacts with your current plan, and whether it makes financial and medical sense is key.
