Why renters insurance?

The obvious…for an affordable price you can protect your personal belongings, your family and your peace of mind because of an unforeseen loss. How much coverage will depend on what you have accumulated over the years…but somewhere between $2,000 to $5,000 per room should be sufficient. One of the biggest problems is keeping an updated inventory of your personal property. With today’s technological advancements the smartphones, tablets and computers are there to help. Many apps are now available to download to help you keep an updated and accurate list of your belongings. With a simple click of a button you can take photos, scan receipts, and bar codes which will give descriptions with all the information needed to expedite a claim. (For us old folks, sorry we are stuck with writing everything down on a pad of paper and please don’t leave the pad in the home in case of fire.) Also remember to have updated appraisals on items such as jewelry, guns, and collectibles to name a few. Ask your agent for upgraded Liability and Medical coverage’s, not just the industries standard limits. For a few dollars more you can have $300,000 liability and $5,000 medical coverage. Look for multi-product discounts by having other insurance products with the same company. Keep your credit score in check, more insurance companies are using credit rating in factoring their rates. Ask about the different deductibles that are available to lower your bottom line as well. And last but not least, ask if there is a discount for paying in full.

Here are a few holiday tips, preventable fire hazards and other safety concerns.

1. Inspect your holiday light strings and discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders, or loose connections.

2. Always turn off holiday lights when you leave the house or when going to bed. I know they are pretty to look at from the road, but a fire truck at 2AM is not.

3. Try to buy the freshest cut tree, they are more resistant to fire. Keep your Christmas tree watered and away from any open flames. I love fake fire resistant trees myself.

4. When using an outdoor timer make sure it is certified by CSA International to switch lights on and off. I have my mine turned on at 6AM to make the paper guy happy :)

5. Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead use a single cord that is long enough to reach the outlet. Yes, I am guilty of this!

6. When hanging outdoor lights, keep electrical connectors off the ground, away from metal, rain gutters. Never use metal nails or tacks to hold them in place.

7. Using a ladder when you put up lights? Choose the correct ladder for the job and if old like me, get someone with younger legs. I don't have trouble getting up there...

8. Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work and replace batteries on January 1st of each year. Be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home. About 19 years ago our daughter developed a seizure disorder as a result of a faulty furnace in her home and no carbon monoxide alarm. And it wasn't an old home either.

9. Need to burn candles...be sure they are in stable holders, out of reach of small children and extinguished before going to bed. Consider electric or battery-powered candles instead.

10. If you have ice hanging from your eave troughs, you have a serious installation and/or ventilation problem in your roof. Those pretty icicles will eventually melt and cause water to back up into the house. I can't tell you how many claims over the years we have paid because of ice damage...eventually causing rates to go up!

Please pass on to friends and family and "Like" our page. Merry Christmas from Mariam and Tom at the Tom Rasler Ins. Agency.
