Here are a few tips for dealing with the damage you may have from this storm.

1. If your neighbors tree fell and caused damage to your house/fence/yard/car, etc., it will be handled through your own insurance. Your neighbor has no liability in that situation, it is considered an "act of God."

2. You are responsible for minimizing the damage to your property/personal belongings. Example: If there is a hole in your roof/house, you need to cover it with a tarp, etc. in order to keep the damage from getting any worse.

3. This is a big one - this snow is going to start melting at some point, probably the end of the week. If your basement has ever had water in it, at any time, go down there in the next couple of days and get your belongings, especially anything you really care about or can't afford to replace on your own, up off the floor. Flooding is never covered under any homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance policy. Your personal belongings will not be replaced. Your damages and cleanup will not be covered. Handle it now so you don't have regrets later.

4. If you were forced to abandon your car, and it was damaged when the city/town moved it out of the way, or if you receive a bill for the towing of your vehicle, check with your insurance company. You may be able to have all or some of the cost handled.

Did you know that it is widely believed that the first auto insurance policy was purchased on 2/27/1898 by Dr. Truman Martin, of Buffalo, NY?* That policy cost $12.25 for the year and gave Dr. Martin $5000 in liability coverage in the event that he crashed into one of the 4,000 other cars (or one of the 18 million horses) in the U.S. at that time.
