We know that having a loss can be overwhelming, and the process may be unfamiliar to you. In order to help you to be prepared in the event that you do experience a loss, we have put together this list of Do's and Don't's for when a loss occurs:

• Speak to your insurance agent to discuss potential risks and issues so they can guide you through the claim process. Report a potential loss immediately, even if you decide not to pursue a claim -- don't wait, Your carrier needs to inspect any potential damage right away. They also needs to be aware of any potential liability issue as soon as possible. If you wait to report a claim, it could jeopardize coverage for any loss, and the damage could get worse.

• Be prepared with an available date and time to meet at the property. A field adjuster will have to inspect the damages right away.

• Take clear & detailed photos of everything that is damaged or potentially damaged.

• Preserve any damaged property so that Great Bay can inspect such.

• If you need to quickly mitigate(try to lessen or reduce severity of the damage such as clean up or make emergency repairs), please ensure that any contractors or service providers preserve anything that is damaged -- before & after photos are very important if mitigation requires any repairs.

• Do not discard any damaged personal property.

• Contact your assigned claims representative or field adjuster with any questions and to go over next steps.

WITH COLDER TEMPS APPROACHING NOW IS THE TIME TO GET PREPARED!

Its important that you take the proper precautions NOW to protect your home from frozen pipes!

Frozen and bursting pipes can result in extensive damage which can be avoided by just taking
a few preventative measures.

1. Leave your heat on and set to a temperature no lower than 60° F.
2. Keep garage doors closed.
3. Open bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
4. Seal air leaks near pipes.
5. Insulate pipes in attics, crawl spaces and pipes close to outside walls.
6. Remove, drain and store outdoor hoses.

Please note: Maintaining proper heat is a requirement of most insurance policies. Failure to do so may jeopardize coverage in the event of a loss. If you have any questions about coverage, please contact me to discuss your options.

NFIP reauthorized through September 30th

Congress has approved a $1.2 trillion funding bill that authorizes the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through September 30, 2024.

The House approved the legislation on Friday, while the Senate passed it early Saturday morning. The White House said President Biden will the bill later Saturday. This prevents a government shutdown and avoids a potential NFIP lapse.

I wanted to share an article I read last month due to the frequency of questions i continue to get on the rising car insurance rates. The link to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics news release is also attached.

AUTO INSURANCE COSTS SOAR BY 20% in the US

There's no relief in sight for US car owners who've faced soaring costs of maintaining a vehicle in the past two years.

Prices of motor-vehicle insurance rose 20.3% in December from a year earlier, the biggest jumphttps://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf
since 1976, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That was the 16th straight month of annual gains exceeding 10%.

And insurance rates will probably keep on rising, propelled by higher costs of replacement parts and repairs, Bloomberg intelligence analysts said last month.

Prices of used cars and trucks have come down from their peaks of two years ago. But the December consumer-price index released Thursday showed an uptick in used-vehicle costs from the previous month, defying economists forecasts for a decline. The surprise monthly increase in that category was among the main drivers of an acceleration in the overall rate of inflation.

Even after a drop in 2023, used-vehicle prices remain up 38% since the start of the pandemic. As for new cars and trucks, prices are not increasing nearly as much as they did in 2022. On an annual basis, they were up only 1% in December.

So, What Is A Flood?

A common theme we see in claims from customers is a misunderstanding of what a qualifying flood event is. We understand the confusion; when a customer sees water, they probably think, "FLOOD!" right away. A key difference is where that water is coming from. Generally speaking, a qualifying flood event is what we call "ground up" rising water.

Events that typically fall into either a homeowners or flood policy

Event Which Policy?
Pipe bursts Homeowners
Storm surge pushes water into your home Flood
Toilet overflows Homeowners
Flash flood washes out your foundation Flood
Hot water heater leaks Homeowners
River overflows into your home Flood
