FLOOD INSURANCE INFORMATION
Each year, homeowners and business owners across the nation sustain significant weather-related property damage due to floods. These can include damage caused by waves, tidal waters, the overflow of a body of water, the rapid accumulation or runoff of surface water, and mudslide. In nearly all cases, these flood losses cannot be prevented or even anticipated. In many instances, the losses are devastating.

Most standard property insurance policies do not provide coverage for flood losses. While flood insurance coverage is often available, it is rarely purchased. Unfortunately, each year we find that some policyholders are surprised and disappointed to learn that damage they have suffered as a direct result of floods is not covered under the policies they purchased.

Please review your insurance program with your agent or company representative. As you consider the need for flood insurance, keep in mind the floods can, and do, occur in locations all over the country. They are not limited to coastal areas or locations with nearby rivers or streams. Several inches of rain falling over a short period of time can cause flood damage, even in normally dry areas that are not prone to flooding. Most flood insurance policies have a 10 to 30-day waiting period before coverage begins (other than a loan closing).

There is an important change in Virginia state law that will affect motor vehicle policies.

Effective January 1, 2025, the new minimum liability limits for motor vehicle insurance will be as follows:
• $50,000 for bodily injury or death of one person per accident.
• $100,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more persons per accident.
• $25,000 for injury to or destruction of property per accident.

These limits reflect an increase from the current minimums of $30,000 / $60,000 / $20,000.

Additionally, for auto insurance policies that carry a combined single liability limit of coverage, the new minimum limit is $125,000 per accident, increasing from the current minimum combined single liability limit of $80,000.

What This Means for You:

Any policies effective on or after January 1, 2025, with liability limits below the new minimums will automatically renew with the updated limits. No action is required from either the customer or the agent to comply with this new law.

FEMA FLOOD INSURANCE TIP
There is a discount available if the Machinery & Equipment in a structure are properly elevated.
Here is what you need to know:
FEMA offers this mitigation discount to incentivize policyholders to take steps that meaningfully reduce their property’s flood risk. But they must meet the eligibility requirements to receive the discount.
‌
The covered Machinery and Equipment (M&E) servicing the building, inside or outside the building, must be elevated to the correct level to be eligible.
• At least the elevation of the floor above the building’s first floor:
• Depending on the foundation type, the building's ‘first floor’ to be elevated above, could be the main living floor, basement floor, crawlspace floor, or enclosure floor (See FEMA Flood Insurance manual for diagrams and further guidance).
‌
All M&E as listed below for each coverage type on the policy must be elevated or they will not be eligible for the discount.
• If the policyholder purchased building-only coverage:
o Central air conditioner (including exterior compressor)
o Furnace
o Heat pump (including exterior compressor)
o Hot water heater
o Elevator machinery and equipment
• If the policyholder purchased contents-only coverage:
o Clothes washers and dryers
o Food freezers
• If the policyholder purchased both building and contents coverage:
o All the M&E and appliances listed above must be elevated

On the application form under the question “Machinery Above First Floor”:
• If the building meets the requirements - select “Yes”
• If the building DOES NOT meet the requirements - select “No”
Important: Incorrectly answering “Yes” could lead to a misrated quote and/or the need for reformation at the time of a claim. You can find more information, including helpful diagrams, based on foundation type, in the FEMA Flood Insurance Manual – Section 3. How to Write / Pages 3.26-3.28
