Last week the Lott IMPACT Trophy announced their Watch List for the 2026 Season at their annual luncheon held at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, California.

Of the 42 announced players, 17 are defensive backs, 16 are defensive lineman and 9 are linebackers.

This year, there are 16 players from the Big Ten (the most of any conference), 13 from the SEC, 6 from the ACC, 5 from the Big XII and 2 from Notre Dame.

The Lott Trophy annually goes to the college defensive player who has had the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field. The winner is selected by a national voter panel, consisting of former winners, members of the media, coaches and members of the Board of Directors of The IMPACT Foundation.

The winner will be announced at a gala black-tie event at The Pacific Club on December 9, 2026.

On Memorial Day, we honor their memory and the families who continue to feel their absence. Their legacy lives on in the lives we're able to lead and the values we hold dear.

Today we remember, we honor and we say thank you.

The photo is the Honolulu Memorial in the National Cemetery of the Pacific located at the Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu. Its walls are etched with the names of 28,788 military personnel who are missing in action or were lost or buried at sea in the Pacific. The statue of Lady Columbia, also known as Lady Liberty, is reported to represent all grieving mothers. She stands on the bow of a ship holding a laurel branch.

This past week, Will and I attended an extremely informative RBC Team Summit meeting in Viking Lakes (just outside of Minneapolis), Minnesota.

The meeting focused on enhancing the client relationship and experience—maximizing our AI to strengthen client communication and reporting. RBC’s upgraded technology now upgrades many of our services---allowing our clients to have access to a team of specialists instead of a team of generalists.

We also discussed behavioral finance—challenging traditional theories that assume markets are ideally efficient. Research continues to show that emotions, biases and mental shortcuts can clearly affect decision-making. Our AI can help investors stay focused on a goals-based framework.

After one of the meetings we were able to visit the Minnesota Vikings Football Team Hall of Fame, as their practice facility is located in Viking Lakes. It definitely got us looking forward to football season.

Looking for a great beach in Kona?

Last summer, before attending a wedding on the island, my wife and I spent a few days at the Mauna Kea Resort.

Opened for guests in July of 1965, it was the first resort on the Big Island and the most expensive hotel ever built at the time. Listed as one of the Historic Hotels of America, it just went through a recent $200 million renovation.

The Mauna Kea Golf Course also just went through an upgrade by Robert Trent Jones Jr. (the course was originally designed by his dad). Even before the hotel was ready for guests, it opened with the televised “Big 3” match featuring Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

The Seaside Racquet Club for hotel guests offers extensive tennis and pickleball—recently named one of the Top 5 tennis destinations in the world.

For art lovers, there are hundreds of museum-quality art objects from the Pacific and Asia throughout the hotel—collected by hotel founder Laurance S. Rockefeller.

I recently attended an outstanding Ramey Wine Dinner at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, CA with guest of honor Alan Ramey.

Known for combining Old World techniques with the distinctive terroirs of Sonoma and Napa, Ramey Wine Cellars produce Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

David Ramey and his wife Carla founded the winery in 1996. This was after David had gained experience working for Christian Moueix at Petrus in Pomerol and then later working with Zelma Long at Simi. David and Zelma collaborated on research in whole-cluster pressing, lees contact and cooler fermentation—a Chardonnay style now used by many wine makers. These techniques earned him the nickname “Professor Chardonnay” by Wine Spectator.

In August of 2025, the Robb Report listed the Ramey, Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros, Napa Valley, 2018 as one of the 50 Greatest Chardonnays of the 21st Century So Far.

Claire and Alan Ramey became co-presidents of Ramey Wine Cellars in 2021, after working in all aspects of winery operations since 2013.

My two favorite wines of the night were the Ramey, Hyde Vineyard, Chardonnay, Sonoma, 2022 and the Ramey, Pedregal Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma 2011.
