Every Reading Journey Has a Story. We’d Like to Hear Yours.
Learning to read doesn’t always come easily. Many children need extra time, different approaches, or additional support before reading begins to click. Early identification and the right support can make a meaningful difference.
The Urban League of Essex County is looking to hear from Newark parents, caregivers, and adults about their experiences with learning to read.
📚 Are you a parent or caregiver who helped a child through reading difficulties?
📖 Are you an adult who struggled with reading as a child—or who learned to read later in life?
💬 Was there a teacher, tutor, family member, program, intervention, or particular approach that made a difference?
We want to hear about your journey: the challenges, the turning points, what helped, and what you wish others had known.
Our goal is to listen and learn from Newark families and community members—and to help more children get the support they need to become confident readers.
Participants whose stories are selected for public sharing may have the opportunity to be featured in a written report and/or video and will receive a stipend for their participation. No story will be shared publicly without the participant’s knowledge and permission.
