Before everyone panics about their federal student loans going into collections...
1. Log on to www.studentaid.gov
2. Click your name in the top right corner, and select "dashboard"
3. Scroll down and select the "View Details" button
4. Scroll towards the bottom of the page and you'll see "Loan Breakdown", and select "View Loans"
5. You'll see if your loans are in forbearance, repayment , or default.
If you are not in default, the government will NOT be garnishing your wages or social security.
If you are in SAVE forbearance, you are not in collections UNLESS your loan breakdown shows you are in default - which means you were likely in default before the 2020 COVID forbearance.
To my understanding, you should only be in a defaulted status if you were already missing payments before the COVID forbearance way back in 2020, or if you opted out of the SAVE forbearance and selected a new payment plan where you missed payments.
