Leaving the US is stressful enough on its own, sorting family, packing up a life, selling the house. For some, there's one more item that joins that list: the exit tax.

It's an area that gets misunderstood a lot, some people worry about it for no reason, others miss it entirely. So we put this carousel together to break down who it actually applies to and what to watch for.

These rules are not hidden. They are just filed somewhere nobody thinks to look until the decision has already been made.

A penalty break that only exists if you leave your job in the right year. A five year clock that started without you noticing. A deadline that lands on whoever inherits rather than on you.

Keeping track of them is our job rather than yours, which is rather the point. But one of these five is probably sitting somewhere in your own plan, and it is worth knowing which one.

If one of them looks like it applies to you, do ask. Usually it is a short answer.

Something new from us. Over the past while, Myles and I have been building a home for the way we think about UK and US financial planning, and I am pleased to say it is now live.

You will find our own articles and a few personal stories, calculators for retirement projections and income, and a small library of guides you can download and keep.
It covers the questions that come up when your financial life spans both countries: holding UK accounts while living in the US, thinking about a move back to the UK, or simply making sense of the two systems together.

This is just the start. Myles and I will keep adding to it over time, so it is worth checking back. Do take a look, and we would be glad to hear what you think or areas you would find useful.

We've had plenty of conversations lately with parents asking about the new Trump Accounts, and chances are you've come across them mentioned somewhere too. So we've outlined the key points here: what they are, how they're taxed, and how they compare to a 529 or a UTMA.

Many people spend months planning a move back to the UK.
Flights, property, healthcare, schools, visas...

But what about the accounts you've spent years building in the US?

Here I cover two areas that are often overlooked and can create unexpected complications once UK residency begins.

One of them involves certain investments that may be treated very differently than many people expect.

If a return to the UK is on your horizon, it's worth taking a look.

For many people with financial ties to both the UK and the United States, retirement planning means navigating two different systems at the same time.

Each country has its own milestones, rules, and points where decisions around pensions, benefits, and withdrawals begin to come into focus.

On their own those moments are manageable. But when accounts and retirement arrangements span two countries, understanding how those timelines interact becomes an important part of planning ahead.
