Annie Hauck-Lawson, Ph.D., R.D. is an urban agriculturalist, Master Composter and founder of ‘Brooklyn Mompost’, a compost education service sited at the Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm. She is co-editor of Gastropolis: Food and New York City (Columbia University Press, paperback 2010). In her Gastropolis chapter, My Little Town: A Bro

oklyn Girl’s Food Voice. Eats.com cited ‘Annie Hauck-Lawson’s own beautiful recollections of her Brooklyn upbringing. She describes foraging for chives in Prospect Park, fishing along the Brooklyn coast, and keeping bees, not to mention the occasional farm animals her father brought home that would “disappear” before an especially delicious dinner (Nicky the pig for one). Her account is striking in her family’s relentless passion for Brooklyn’s own resources, exemplifying a local sustainable existence long before the term was coined.’

Annie Hauck-Lawson served as the foodways curator of the 2001 Smithsonian Folklife Festival New York City program, overseeing eighty live presentations over a two week period of New York life through food. Her scholarship is grounded in the ‘food voice’, a term that she coined two decades ago, now an applied educational tool in the food studies community to explore ways that food serves as a channel of communication and avenue of identity for individuals and groups of people.

We had a happy end of the work week with a brisk trip to Governors Island to see the Harbor School’s ‘Earth Tub’ in action (an institution-sized composter that we at Poly Prep are considering).
Thank you, friends at Earth Matter and the Brooklyn Compost Project for facilitating this informative morning!

On Governors Island- the great Charlie Beyrer of Earth Matter giving me exciting updates of their wonderful composting activities there. Saw dear Shig Matsukawa volunteering at the farm and we reconnected over fermenting food waste. Stood by the recycled shells, part of The Billion Oyster Project; a blissful day!
